A Family Photography Session With Young Kids: What It Really Looks Like (3 to 4 Year Olds)
If you have a three or four year old, I know what you might be picturing. Everyone lined up and smiling at the camera, while your little one runs in the opposite direction.
Here is what I want you to know. That is not a failed session. That is a normal one, and it often leads to the best photos.

It starts slowly
Children this age need time to warm up to someone new. I don't rush in with the camera. I say hello, I crouch down to their level, and I let them show me their favourite toy or tell me all about their shoes. Within a few minutes, most little ones decide I'm all right.
We play, and I photograph
Instead of asking for perfect poses, we play games. We walk to a tree, race to the next tickle spot and hunt for the biggest stick. Your three year old might be giggling on your hip one minute and refusing to be held the next. Both are welcome, and I'll be there for it all.
Short and flexible
Sessions with little ones are shorter than you might expect. Often the magic happens in the first half hour or so, before tired legs and hungry tummies arrive. Bring a snack and a drink. A small bribe, like a treat after the session, is completely allowed. A lollipop has saved many a Brisbane family session.
What if they cry?
Sometimes they do. A meltdown at three is simply a big feeling, and it is not a reflection of you or your parenting. We pause, have a cuddle and try again. Sometimes the photo of you comforting your child ends up being the one you treasure most.
The photos you'll actually get
You'll receive a mix. A few where everyone is looking at the camera, and many more of the real stuff: your child's sticky hand in yours, the way your partner swings them up high, the cheeky look over a shoulder. Those moments take you straight back to who your child was at this age.

Why this age is worth capturing
Three and four year olds are full of personality. They have strong opinions, funny words and little habits you swear you'll never forget, but you will. A family photography session in Brisbane at this age gives you a record of who your family is right now.
A few tips from me
Book around nap time and mealtimes, not through them
Tell your child a lady with a camera is coming to play
Let go of the idea of perfect, because real is better
If you're hoping for relaxed family photos in Brisbane with your little ones, I'd love to meet you all.
