I hear this worry from almost every parent before their session, usually said with a slightly anxious laugh, as though a wide awake baby might ruin everything. It will not. I promise.

Sleepy newborn photos are not the only kind worth having

There is a particular style of newborn photography built around a deeply sleeping baby curled into a soft, sculpted pose. It is beautiful, but it is only one style, and it is not the one I specialise in. My work leans lifestyle and natural, which means an alert, wide eyed baby staring straight into the camera is not a problem to solve. It is a moment to capture.

Awake babies often make for the most striking images

Some of the most captivating newborn photographs are the ones where a baby’s eyes are wide open, taking in this strange new world for the very first time. That unfocused, curious newborn gaze only lasts a few short weeks. If your baby is wide awake during your session, we lean into it rather than fighting it.

We work with your baby’s rhythm, not against it

If your baby is unsettled, we pause for a feed or a cuddle. If they are wide awake and alert, we photograph that alertness. If they eventually drift off, we capture that softness too. A good newborn session flexes entirely around your baby, rather than expecting your baby to flex around the camera.

There is no such thing as a difficult baby for this

Every single newborn I have photographed has been different, and every session has looked a little different as a result. Fussy, wide awake, sleepy, feeding constantly, it all becomes part of the story of your particular baby in those particular days, and that is exactly what makes the images meaningful.
