What to Wear for Family Photos: A Brisbane Family Photographer's Guide

Every family I photograph asks me the same thing before we've even picked a date. What on earth do we wear?

I understand why it feels like such a big question. You want to look like yourselves, you want everyone to feel good, and you want to look back on these photos in twenty years without wincing at an outfit. The good news is that it's much simpler than it seems, and I'm here to help you through it.

Start with how you want to feel

Before you think about colours, think about comfort. If your toddler hates the scratchy collar or your teenager keeps tugging at a shirt that doesn't fit, it shows in the photos. Choose clothes your family can move in, hug in and sit on the grass in. The photos where everyone is at ease are always the ones that end up framed on the wall.

Pick a gentle colour palette

You don't need to match. In fact, I'd steer you away from everyone wearing the same white shirt and jeans. Instead, choose two or three colours that sit well together and let each person wear their own version. Think cream with dusty blue, or rust with sage. Earthy tones look beautiful against Brisbane's bushland and golden light, and they won't compete with each other in the frame.

Add texture and layers

Texture gives a photo depth. A knit cardigan, a linen shirt, a flowing skirt or a pair of denim overalls on your little one all add something. Layers also give us options, because a jacket or a scarf can change the feel of a photo halfway through your session.

Dress for Brisbane weather

Our humidity is real, and a sweaty, uncomfortable family is not a happy one. Breathable fabrics like cotton and linen are your friends, especially in the warmer months. Most sessions happen early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the light is at its best and the temperature is kinder. If your session is by the water or on an exposed hill, bring a light layer for when the breeze picks up.

What to leave in the wardrobe

Big logos, loud slogans and neon colours pull the eye away from your faces. Very busy patterns can also feel overwhelming when several people wear them together. If you love a pattern, choose one person to wear one and keep everyone else more toned down.

Don't forget shoes and the small things

Think about shoes before the day. Bare feet are perfect for the beach, and clean sneakers or simple sandals work well on grass. Pack a spare top for the kids too, because snacks and sunscreen have a way of finding light coloured shirts.

Not sure? Send me a photo

Lay your outfits out on the bed, snap a photo and send it to me. I'd honestly love to help. Part of my job is making you feel prepared, so that on the day all you have to think about is each other.
