When Should You Book a Newborn Photographer in Brisbane? (And what happens if baby arrives early?)

One question I hear often from expecting parents is, “When should we book our newborn photos?”
I completely understand the uncertainty. Those first tiny, sleepy days pass in a blur, and most parents already feel like time is moving too quickly before their baby has even arrived. Wanting to capture this stage beautifully is something many families later feel incredibly grateful for.
From my experience as a Brisbane newborn photographer and a parent myself, the best time to book is earlier than most people think.

The Ideal Time to Book Your Newborn Photography Session
Ideally, you should book your newborn photographer during your second trimester, or early in your third trimester. Somewhere between 20 and 30 weeks is perfect.
Booking at this stage gives me time to reserve space around your due date while still allowing flexibility if your baby decides to arrive earlier or later than expected.
Because newborn sessions are photographed within a short window, planning ahead makes a significant difference.

Why Do Newborn Photos Happen So Early?
Newborn sessions are typically held within the first 5 to 14 days after birth.
During this stage, babies are usually:
Sleepier
Naturally curled
Comfortable being gently posed
Less disturbed by movement
After the first few weeks, babies become more alert and stretch out of those womb-like positions. Beautiful images are always possible, but the style naturally changes.
Early booking helps ensure you do not miss this fleeting stage.
What Happens After You Book?
Once your session is reserved, I note your due date and keep a window available.
After your baby arrives, you simply reach out and we confirm the exact session day. There is no pressure to make firm decisions while you are still pregnant, and nothing feels rushed once your baby is here.
My goal is always to make the experience feel calm and supportive so you can focus on your baby rather than logistics.

What If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?
Babies rarely follow calendars, and that is completely expected.
If your baby arrives earlier than planned, I have experience adjusting schedules to accommodate early arrivals safely.
If your baby takes a little longer to make their appearance, we simply move your session accordingly. Because I only accept a limited number of newborn bookings each month, I am able to maintain this flexibility for my families.
Can We Wait Until After Birth to Book?
Some parents consider waiting until their baby arrives before reaching out.
While this can occasionally work, availability is never guaranteed. Newborn sessions require thoughtful scheduling, and many photographers book their calendars months in advance.
Those early postpartum days are also beautifully intense and often sleep deprived. Organising a photography session is rarely something parents enjoy adding to their list at that stage.
Booking ahead provides peace of mind. You can settle into life with your baby knowing these fleeting days will be preserved.

Choosing the Right Type of Newborn Session
Every family is different, which is why there is no single approach that suits everyone.
Some parents love the relaxed storytelling of in-home newborn photography, while others want to capture the very beginning with a hospital session.
If you are curious about hospital sessions, you can read more in my guide to Fresh 48 photography in Brisbane, where I explain how these sessions beautifully document the first hours of your baby’s life.
A Gentle Reminder That Time Moves Quickly
Again and again, parents tell me how quickly the newborn stage disappeared. The tiny fingers, the soft stretches, the way your baby fits perfectly against your chest. These details change within weeks.
Photographs allow you to return to that feeling long after the moment has passed.
Booking early is not about adding another task to your list. It is about giving yourself one less thing to think about later.
