What Age Is Best for Newborn Photos?

If you are newly pregnant and already wondering about timing, you are more organised than most of us ever manage to be. Here is what I tell every family who asks.

The traditional window is the first two weeks

Many photographers, myself included, generally recommend booking your newborn session within the first fourteen days. Babies at this age tend to still have that curled up, freshly arrived softness, and they typically sleep more deeply, which can make for gentler, calmer sessions. Especially around 5 days old- just the most perfect amount of squish!

But two weeks is a guide, not a rule

Birth does not run on a schedule, and neither does life with a brand new baby. Some babies are born early and need time in hospital first. Some parents are recovering from a difficult birth and need those first weeks simply to rest and bond, without a camera in the house. If your baby is three weeks old, six weeks old, or three months old when you finally feel ready, your photos will still be beautiful and still be worth having. This little one was older than 'recommended' but we still got such beautiful photos.

Fresh 48 is its own separate window

If you love the idea of documenting the very first hours, a Fresh 48 session happens in hospital, usually within the first two days of life. This is about raw honesty rather than a particular pose or sleepy softness. The hospital bracelet, the exhaustion on your face, the way you and your partner look at this brand new person. These become some of the most treasured images families keep.

What matters more than age is how you feel

A newborn session should happen when you are ready, not when a calendar says you should be. If you are still finding your feet in those first days, that is completely normal, and a photographer who has done this before will work gently around wherever you are.

I photograph newborn and Fresh 48 sessions across Brisbane, Springfield/Ipswich and South East Queensland, and I always talk timing through with you individually rather than pushing a strict rule. Every baby, and every family, arrives in their own time.
