What is a Fresh 48 Session at Mater Mothers Hospital?

The First Hours With Your Baby
There is something quiet about the first hours after your baby arrives.
The room feels softer somehow. Midwives come and go (and come and go, and come and go..) the bassinet sits beside your bed, and you find yourself staring at this tiny person you have waited so long to meet.
A Fresh 48 session captures this time while you are still in hospital. The photographs take place within the first day or two after birth, while everything is still new and unfolding slowly around you.
These sessions are not posed or styled. Your baby stays close to you, usually wrapped in the hospital blankets or resting in the bassinet beside your bed. The focus is simply on the small moments that happen naturally in those early hours.

Fresh 48 Photography at Mater Mothers Hospital
I photograph Fresh 48 sessions at Mater Mothers Hospital in South Brisbane, including both the public and private maternity wards.
Once your baby arrives, you simply send a message and we organise a time for me to visit while you are still in hospital. Sessions are usually photographed during the day when the room has the best natural light, and during the hospital visiting hours.
Everything about the session is gentle and unhurried. If your baby needs feeding, settling, or a little time to rest, we simply pause. These photographs are meant to reflect the real rhythm of those first days.
Some of the moments I often capture include your baby resting in the hospital bassinet, parents holding their baby for the first time, siblings meeting their new brother or sister, and the tiny details that feel impossible to forget but somehow fade faster than you expect.
A Place That Means Something to Me
Mater Mothers Hospital is a place that holds a lot of meaning for me personally.
It is where my own son was born.
Every time I walk through the halls to photograph a Fresh 48 session I notice the small details that bring it all back. The soft hospital blankets. The quiet rooms. The feeling that something important has just happened inside those walls.
I often find myself remembering those first hours with my own baby while I photograph new families meeting theirs. It is a privilege to step into that space with you and quietly document the beginning of your story.

When to Book Your Fresh 48 Session
Fresh 48 sessions are best booked during pregnancy so I can reserve space around your due date.
Babies rarely arrive exactly when we expect them to, so I keep my calendar flexible. Once your baby is born, you simply send a message from hospital and we choose a time within the first day or two for the session.
Most sessions last around an hour, giving plenty of time for feeding, cuddles, and settling your baby comfortably.
After Your Session
After your Fresh 48 session, you will be invited to view your photographs during a personal viewing appointment.
These appointments take place at my viewing space in Darra, which is easily reached from the Centenary and Ipswich Motorways. This is where you will see your images for the first time and choose how you would like to enjoy them in your home.
For many families, these photographs become some of the most meaningful images they have of their baby’s very beginning. If you would prefer an online gallery, we can discuss this option too.
